One nasty side effect of my porch falling off was that it was pulling my front door out of plumb. A lot. Once I had all of the work done to prevent that from happening in the future, I could start thinking about a nice new door; one that didn’t need to be kicked open (or shut) and wouldn’t have 1/4″ to 1/2″ gaps at various points along its edges. So I’ve owned my house for 3 years now, and for 2.8 of those, the front porch has been falling off. I’ve known about the problem since my home inspection, but up until last summer it was ignorable (sorta). In August I got off my ass and had a few contractors come out to give me estimates. Of the 4 contractors I called, 2 gave me estimates – roughly $8k and $16k (!). The difference was enough that I still had no idea where to begin, so I put off the project some more. Read more »

OOPS: so i tried upgrading my old blog tonight, but instead i installed right overtop. that made things not happy, in ways that i could not decipher. that means ALL FIVE of my previous posts are gone* and i get to start fresh.
YAY: new beginnings and not out-of-date software!
* i backed up the database before i “upgraded” so i still technically have those posts, just need to figure out how to get them back…
